The piano is one of the most iconic instruments of all time. Modeled after other keyboard instruments, the modern piano was invented by Bartolomeo Cristofori at the turn of the 18th century. Since then, the piano has enjoyed extraordinary success, and is used in all types of music from classical to jazz to pop. The piano is one of the most popular instruments taught here at Music Authority School, and we have several skilled piano teachers to meet your piano lesson needs.  Our piano instructors are accomplished educators that can customize a piano lesson plan to your piano playing needs and goals.  Since 2009 we have served students from all surrounding areas of Wayne County with professional piano lessons, and are ready to help you achieve you or your child's piano playing goals as well!

What is a good age to start piano lessons?

The age a child is ready to begin piano lessons varies from child to child. Many students at our school start as young as four given they are able to count up to 10 and know their alphabet. If you think your child may be ready to begin piano lessons, you may schedule a 30-minute introductory lesson and one of our instructors will assess your child’s readiness to begin piano lessons. Children who are too young to begin piano lessons are encouraged to enroll in Music Authority’s Music Play for Beginners Program.

While not all young children are ready to begin piano lessons, it’s never too late to start! Many of our students are adults who are eager to cultivate their passion for music.

What can I expect in a typical piano lesson?

Piano lessons are tailored to suit a student’s individual needs. Because each person learns differently, there is no set curriculum. Our highly trained piano teachers will assess the student in the initial lesson and devise a plan of study. The student will be assigned books which we have available for purchase in the studio.

Students will learn a variety of skills to help them develop as pianists, learning how to read music and play repertoire. As a student progresses, they will learn about different forms of music and may choose to study specialized skills such as improvisation or composition. Our students are exposed to a wide variety of music such as classical, jazz, and pop. We encourage advancing piano students to collaborate with other musicians and vocalists; many of our more advanced piano students practice their collaborative skills with other students.

Performance is an important part of studying music, and at Music Authority we prepare students for two recitals each year. Many of our students also compete in the American Guild of Music competition in April of each year.

How long will it take to learn the piano?

A musician never truly stops learning! How quickly a student advances depends on age and the amount of practice put in. Your piano teacher will help you devise a practice plan to help you reach your musical goals.

What kind of piano should I purchase?

There are two main types of acoustic pianos. Grand pianos are larger, with the strings being positioned in a horizontal frame. Upright pianos can fit against a wall and have vertical strings. Piano sizes vary greatly as does cost.

While acoustic pianos are recommended, many students begin their studies on a smaller and more price-efficient electronic keyboard. We generally recommend a keyboard with touch-sensitive, weighted keys, as the action of such keyboards more closely mimics the action of acoustic pianos.

Purchasing a piano can be a tricky process, but our professional piano teachers are here to help! Discuss your budget with your teacher and they can help you find the perfect piano to suit your needs.
