Drum Lessons
Since 2009, Music Authority has been a leading provider of professional drum lessons in Metro Detroit for students of all ages and skill levels
Percussion instruments are some of the oldest in human history. Even before drums were created, people created percussive sounds with their hands and feet. There are many types of percussion instruments, with the most popular being the drum set. The drum set is a staple of modern bands, particularly jazz, rock, country, and pop groups.
Our experienced drum instructors are skilled in various styles and genres of drum playing, and are passionate about helping our students of all ages across S.E. Michigan achieve their drum playing and musical goals.
Prefer taking drum lessons remotely? Music Authority now offers online drum lessons.
What is a good age to start drum lessons?
The age a child is ready to begin drum lessons varies from child to child. Many students start as young as six. If you think your child may be ready to begin drum lessons, you may schedule a 30-minute introductory lesson and one of our drum instructors will assess your child’s readiness to begin drum lessons. Children who are too young to begin drum lessons are encouraged to enroll in Music Authority’s Music Play for Beginners Program.
While not all young children are ready to begin drum lessons, it is never too late to start! Many of our students are adults who are eager to cultivate their passion for music.
What can I expect in a typical drum lesson?
Drum lessons are tailored to suit a student’s individual needs. Because each person learns differently, there is no set curriculum. Our skilled drum teachers will assess the student in the initial lesson and devise a plan of study. The student will be assigned books which we have available for purchase in the studio.
Students will learn a variety of skills to help them develop as musicians. As a student progresses, they will learn about different forms of music. Our drum students are exposed to a wide variety of music such as jazz, rock, and pop. We encourage advancing students to collaborate with other musicians and vocalists; many of our more advanced drum students practice their collaborative skills with other students.
Performance is an important part of studying music, and at Music Authority we prepare students for two recitals each year. Many of our students also compete in the American Guild of Music competition in April of each year.
Who should play the drums?
At Music Authority, we offer a comprehensive education in percussion. While some students choose to study the art of playing a drum kit, others hone their skills at a variety of percussion instruments. Drum lessons are perfect for someone looking to learn or refine a sense of rhythm. Many of our students play in bands and orchestras where they are critical to helping keep the tempo of the group.
How long will it take to learn the drums?
A musician never stops learning! How quickly a student advances depends on age and the amount of practice put in. Your teacher will help you devise a practice plan to help you reach your musical goals.
What kind of drums should I purchase?
There are many options when it comes to purchasing a drum set, including child-sized kits and electronic sets. If you are not ready to purchase a full drum set, there are practice pads on which beginning students can practice rhythm basics. Your drum teacher can help you determine what to purchase to suit your needs.
